RUSKIN LANE CONSULTING

For seven years I coordinated Scotland's Doors Open Days, an events programme giving free access to sites of architectural, historical or cultural interest, normally closed to the public.

Unique in its scale, scope and level of public appeal, it gives communities, charities and businesses the chance to promote and celebrate many aspects of local heritage and culture. It was pioneered in 1990 and has become Scotland’s largest free festival of architecture and the built environment.

This role required an approach that was creative, highly-organised, sensitive, strategic and far-sighted. I was involved with all aspects of event management including fundraising, grant applications, marketing, social networking, press liaison, website development and evaluation.

I grew the programme to include every local authority area in Scotland with around 225,000 visits recorded at more than 1070 events and supported by over 5,500 volunteers. This was achieved through close collaboration with stakeholders at all levels including event organisers, a large network of area coordinators, local and national government.

I worked closely with EventScotland and VisitScotland to bring Doors Open Days to the attention of domestic and international tourists, and increased awareness of the economic as well as social and cultural benefits of participation.

New programme themes were developed, such as ‘Green Doors’, industrial heritage and storytelling supported by partnerships with many different organisations and groups.

I also coordinated the PhotoArch / My Place Photography Competition. This project is aimed at school-aged children in Scotland, and uses photography to explore local history and architecture. In 2013 I designed a joint exhibition installed at the Lighthouse in Glasgow for the My Place Photography and My Place Awards. I secured a Heritage Lottery Fund grant for a two-year project developing workshops and educational resources, which was launched in 2013.

More broadly, I supported the Scottish Civic Trust’s corporate objectives by informing its strategic development, outreach, educational, fundraising and marketing activities.
